The hospitalization area of the center, which consolidates all the activities of the Pediatric Oncology Area at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, is operating at over 70% occupancy.
It is the largest pediatric oncology center in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, launched in 2022 in Barcelona, has already deployed comprehensive patient care. Since the transition of hospitalization, the average occupancy rate on the ward has exceeded 70%, and around five patients have been attended to each day through the at-home oncology patient care program.
Regarding outpatient care, which includes 21 external consultations and 26 day hospital boxes, the first quarter of 2023 concluded with an average of 27 treatment sessions and 40 daily blood tests in the Day Hospital area. The Day Hospital also attends to patients during the weekend, at a volume similar to that prior to the center’s opening. The new Day Hospital has also facilitated the repurposing of the space previously designated within the hospitalization building, which can now more agilely accommodate other specialties (nephrology, allergy testing, immunology treatments, etc.).
The Surgical Block is equipped with two high-tech operating rooms. During the first quarter of 2023, the second operating room was launched, where complex 3D-planned oncological surgeries are performed.
The SJD Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona also features a specialized rehabilitation area for center patients, equipped with materials tailored to their care needs. This not only enables the simultaneous care of more children and adolescents but also consolidates the care for hospitalized and outpatient patients in one location, where children can receive specific care based on their pathology and age groups.

The SJD Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona is now complete with the opening of the new pediatric oncology laboratories, where clinical care and research activities are unified and work is already underway. This space encapsulates the care model of the new center, based on comprehensive patient care and the translation of research into clinical practice whenever possible.
